Electricity is one of the amenities that have contributed to the improvement of peoples’ lifestyle not only in Kenya, but also globally. In Kenya, electricity is provided by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).
Kenya Power and Lighting Company is among the top parastatals in Kenya. You can read more about these parastatals using this link.
A decade ago, only a few number of homesteads could afford electricity. Nowadays, almost every household is served by an electric post which is an iceberg tip of presence of electricity in those homesteads, especially those near transport routes.
Homesteads that were being served with electricity had traditional post paid electricity meters. These meters were silent and ‘analogue’.
In this digital era, the KPLC has provided digital electricity meters which sometimes make a lot of noise especially when the units go below a certain value. Being efficient, they offer prepaid services which means you have to pay first for you to get electricity.
In this article, I will show you a few presses that you can do to your meters to stop that annoying meter noises.
Steps to Switch Off the Beeping Noise on KPLC Prepaid Meters
When the KPLC was launching the prepaid meters, it did not settle on one model. this was because the company was looking for the most efficient and portable, compact model.
This explains why different homesteads have different meter models such as Inhemeter, Hexing, Nirav, Conlog Intech, and Actaris . We are hoping that in the near future, these meters will be replaced to settle on one model. Therefore switching off the annoying sounds on these prepaid meters varies from one meter to another.
Hexing meter model seems to be most common in many households. To stop the beeping sound on this meter you need to press 812, then hash (#), or press 812 then “Enter”.
Conlog Intech Meter
In one long press on the hash (#) button will stop the sound on a Conlog meter that keeps beeping when you have few units. You can also stop the beeping sound by pressing the delete/backspace button for 3 secs
When units go below 20 on your Actaris meter, it will start making that annoying noise. To stop this sound as you plan to buy additional tokens, long press the “Enter” button.
If your meter has the name “Nirav Star Instrument” printed on it, just press 1037 then “Enter” 3 times.
If you are not sure of your meter model, try one method after another until you press the right button. Sharing this information is caring. Try it!
