The deadline of applying for this fellowship is 10TH October 2018.

This fellowship is a flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative that empowers young people through academic course work, leadership training and networking.

In 2019,the fellowship will provide 700 young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with opportunity to sharpen their skills at a US college/university with support for professional development after they return home.

This fellowship is conducted as a merit-based competition. All eligible applications will be reviewed after the deadline by independent readers. After review, chosen semi-finalists will be interviewed by the United States embassies/consulates in their home countries. If selected for an interview, applicants will be required to provide a copy of their passport.



-Applicants should be between 25 to 35 years old. However, exceptional applicants of 21 to 2 years old might be considered.

-Applicants should be non-US citizens.

-Applicants should not be employees or immediate family members of employees of the U.S Government.

-Applicants should be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.

The following criteria will be used by the selection panel to evaluate applications:

-A proven record of leadership and accomplishment in public service, business or civic engagement.

-A demonstrated commitment to public community service, volunteerism and mentor ship.

-Ability to work cooperatively and respect opinions of others.

-Strong social and communication skills.

-Commitment to return to Africa and apply leadership skills and training to benefit the applicant’s country or community after they return home.
