Hearing loss is a very bad thing and it can make a person totally depressed because of changes that come about as a result of losing his/her hearing capability.

Some of the situations a person goes through after losing his/her sense of hearing are isolation and having difficulty to do things that he/she used to do before.

Something like listening to music becomes a thing of the past. It is therefore important that you are aware of the things that lead to loss of sense of hearing, the types of hearing loss and even its treatment .

So what are the causes of hearing loss?
The following are some of the causes associated with hearing impairment;

-Hereditary disorders

-Exposure to loud noise

-Diseases such as meningitis, mumps and chicken pox

-Genetic defect




-Presence of foreign substances in the ear

-Fluid in the ear as a result of colds

-Infection in the ear canal

-Malformation of the ear structures

Types of hearing loss

The types of hearing loss are classified depending on the stage to which the hearing loss has reached.

There are three types of hearing loss which are conducive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss and mixed hearing loss.

  • Conducive hearing loss is when the loss is due to problems with the ear canal, ear drum, and the little bones of the ear.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss is when hearing loss is due to problems of the inner most part of the ear.
  • Mixed hearing loss is the combination of conducive and sensorineural hearing loss. It means that there may be damage in the outer part of the ear, the middle part of the ear and the inner most part of the ear.

Hearing loss is something you should protect yourself from. You can protect yourself from hearing loss by reducing your exposure to loud noise and eating right.
